How To Play Guitar: Power Chords (NG08)

What's up future rock stars!!!
Hope your guitar learning journey is going well.
Today we are going to learn Power chords.

Power chords, or 5th chords, are very easy to play and they sound really badass. They are used very frequently in any kind of rock music, especially distorted music.

But what exactly are they? Power chords are also called 5th chords because they consist only of the root note and the 5th note of the major scale (1 5). This is also called a dyad chord, or two note chord. (The chord notation is: C5, D5, A5, E5,... So if you are looking up chord progressions and see this notation, you know it's time to rock out with some power chords.)

The cool thing about these chords, other than their awesome sound, is that they use only one shape. That right, doesn't matter if you are playing an A, an E or an F#, they all use the same shape. You can play this shape anywhere on the fretboard with the root on the E-string or A-string.

Here is the chord diagram and three fingerings, you can use whatever fingering you like best. I personally like to play them with my index and pinky, it keeps my hand more relaxed and dexterous.

To practice this we'll take a look Blizkrieg Bop by the Ramones and Rock you like a Hurricane by the Scorpions.

Hope this helped you out, if it did, don't hesitate to subscribe.
Don't forget to listen and have fun!!!
